WHAT TO DO IF I SMELL GAS?

DON’T IGNORE IT

Natural gas is odourless on its own, but gas companies add a sulfur-like smell to make it easier to detect leaks. If you smell this distinctive odour, taking immediate action is crucial. Even a faint smell of gas can be a sign of a serious problem.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

DO NOT USE ANY ELECTRICAL ITEMS

One of the most critical safety steps is to avoid anything that could create a spark, as gas is highly flammable. Do not turn on or off any light switches, plug-in or unplug appliances, or light candles, matches, or lighters.

VENTILATE THE PROPERTY

If it’s safe to do so, open windows and doors to ventilate the area. Fresh air can help to disperse the gas.

EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY

If the gas smell is strong or persists, evacuate the premises immediately. Make sure everyone in your household gets out safely. Once outside, keep a safe distance from the building.

CALL FOR HELP

Once you are safely out of the building, call the National Gas Emergency Service  on 0800 371 787
